HKSAR: 10 Years On

3. “You…” - By the time the first Chief Executive of the HKSAR was about to be selected, Tung Chee Hwa began to stand out in this political horse race.

4. “A Job!” - In 2007, Donald Tsang campaigned to stay on for five more years. His campaign slogan was: “I will get the job done!”

5. A Link in Between – Ching Cheong is a typical patriot - a very different one from those “patrioteers” who morphed into patriotism all of a sudden. The news of his detention on the Mainland and the charges against him for espionage came as a shock.

6. An Eight-year Melodrama - Real life situations are often more dramatic than stage drama. Nearly all images in this work can be traced to news photos during the eight years from 1997 to 2003.

7. A Caged Act - The bird cage in this painting is imaginary, but, for those who know the mechanism of how the Chief Executive is selected, it is not unreal.

8. Fireworks and Candlelight - We have fireworks at least once a year. In contrast with the official event of the grand show of fireworks, we also have a candlelight vigil every year.

9. As Usual - What was considered totally unacceptable under the socialist flag, like gambling and going for women, could be tolerated in Hong Kong.

10. Two Currencies - Over the years, Hong Kong has been looking more and more to the north for business opportunities. Now, tourists from the Mainland contribute the most to Hong Kong’s tourism.
